Last Thursday 2U Inc. announced Semester Online: the first-of-its-kind program to offer for-credit undergraduate courses online through a consortium of top-tier universities. Qualified college students will be able to access rigorous classes with our university partners from anywhere in the world beginning in the fall of 2013.
The current consortium includes Brandeis University, Duke University, Emory University, Northwestern University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Notre Dame, University of Rochester, Vanderbilt University, Wake Forest University and Washington University in St. Louis. In the coming months we expect to add to this already exceptional list.
The announcement itself was done live over 2U’s online platform. On screen with me were Ed Macias, Peter Lange, Daniel Linzer, and Lynn Zimmerman provosts at Washington University in St. Louis, Duke University, Northwestern University, and Emory University. Reporters were invited to join the Semester Online “classroom” to view the announcement and ask questions. A recording is posted below. The real time interaction you see is the same experience that students and teachers have in their weekly synchronous class sessions in all of 2U’s programs.
This announcement was the culmination of a lot of work from the founding universities, initial consortium schools, and my team at 2U. To my awesome team-thank you. This wouldn’t have happened without you guys. All of you continue to prove that we can actually change the world.
2U team hard at work during the semester online announcement.
Semester Online is a game changing opportunity for universities, students, professors and 2U.
It’s simply awesome to ride this Rocketship.
